Kit Downes, jazz piano
Kit Downes (www.kitdownes.com) is a BBC Jazz Award winning, Mercury Music Award nominated, solo recording artist for ECM Records. He has toured the world performing on piano, church organ or keyboards, and has written commissions for Cheltenham Music Festival, London Contemporary Orchestra, Stavanger Konserthus, Cologne Philharmonie, BBC Radio 3 and the Scottish Ensemble. His program at Pontiac Enchanté will be based on his 2018 ECM Records album ‘Obsidian’. It is a musical response to volcanicity, slow processes that cause extreme reactions. A mixture of written and semi-scored/semi-improvised pieces, it was inspired by the nuances and extended techniques of chamber organs, as well as the abstract minimalism of the Suffolk coastline. It explores themes of duration, vibration and mechanics, as well as the raw melodicism for which he is known.
Will include selections based on Kit’s recently released album ‘Obsidian’. To get a sense of Kit’s soundworld, visit his website, or look up one of his albums on iTunes or Spotify.
